Description

This large and rugged mastiff type dog has big black lips that hang down slightly, a thick arched neck, a high-set tail and a short double coat that's longer around the collar and tail. Also known as the Karabash or Kangal Dog, the Anatolian Shepherd is traditionally a shepherd's companion but was also used in war and for hunting because of its fighting abilities when its master or herd was threatened.

Characteristics

The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a large and powerful breed that is known for its protective nature and strong work ethic. These dogs are typically calm, confident, and independent, with a natural inclination towards guarding and protecting their family and territory.

Anatolian Shepherds are highly intelligent and have a strong sense of loyalty towards their owners. They are also very independent thinkers and can be stubborn at times, which means they require firm and consistent training from an early age.

While they are generally gentle and affectionate with their family, Anatolian Shepherds can be wary of strangers and may be aggressive towards perceived threats. They are excellent watchdogs and will defend their family and property with great determination if needed. If you're new to owning a dog, you might want to steer clear of this breed.

They may be inclined to chase small animals due to their history as livestock guardians. Early socialisation and training can help mitigate this behavior, but potential owners should be aware of this trait.

Health problems

This breed can be prone to hypothyroidism or eyelid entropion (an eyelid that rolls inward).

Exercise

They have a high level of stamina and energy. Adult Anatolian Shepherds should have at least 60-90 minutes of exercise each day, which can include a combination of walks, runs, and playtime in a securely fenced yard.

Grooming

Brush the coat thoroughly during shedding season.

Living Environment

Apartment living is not suitable for this breed. It will do best with at least a large backyard. They can get aggressive when they're around other dogs of the same sex in the same house. And watch out, they're like a magnet for fleas, so if you've got cats or other pets, it's probably not the best match.
