Description
The Bullmastiff, a powerful canine behemoth, typically weighs between 50-59 kgs and stands tall at the shoulder, measuring a whopping 63-69cm. These dogs sport a short, dense coat that can be fawn, brindle, or red in color, and their square, wrinkled heads add an intimidating aura to their already imposing presence. Alternative names for the Bullmastiff include the "Bully" or the "Mastiff. Originating in England during the mid-1800s, the Bullmastiff was originally bred to guard large estates and protect against poachers. This formidable breed was created by crossing the English Mastiff with the Old English Bulldog, resulting in a canine powerhouse that continues to impress to this day.
Characteristics
Bullmastiffs are renowned for their loyalty, courage, and protective instincts. They exhibit a calm and affectionate demeanor towards their families, but remain wary and guarded with strangers. Given their immense size and strength, they require an experienced owner who can provide adequate training and socialization.
Health Problems
Unfortunately, like many of their large breed counterparts, Bullmastiffs are predisposed to several health issues, including hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, and cancer. Regular veterinary check-ups and proper nutrition are vital to maintaining their well-being.
Exercise
Despite their considerable stature, Bullmastiffs aren't overly energetic and generally require moderate exercise, such as daily walks or supervised playtime in a fenced yard.
Grooming
Bullmastiffs have a short, dense coat that sheds moderately throughout the year, so it's important to brush them regularly to keep their coat clean and healthy. They don't need to be bathed frequently, but when they do, it's essential to use a shampoo made for dogs to prevent any skin irritation.
Living Environment
Bullmastiffs thrive in homes with spacious, securely fenced yards that provide ample opportunities for exercise and play. They can live in apartments, but it's not the best setup for them.
They are kid-friendly, but can be protective of their family and wary of strangers, so early socialisation is important.
