Description
A powerful hunting dog and all-round family dog, the English Pointer has a short, smooth and dense coat that mainly comes in white with liver, lemon, black and/or orange markings (either patched or speckled).
Temperament
High in energy and a very keen hunter, the Pointer will be calm at home with enough daily vigorous exercise. Smart, loyal, clean, patient, friendly, affectionate, adaptable and sociable, it likes children but may be reserved with strangers.
Health Problems
The Pointer can be prone to hip dysplasia, thyroid problems, dwarfism and skin conditions.
Exercise
The Pointer should not be taken on as a family pet unless the family can guarantee a lot of daily vigorous exercise to prevent restlessness. It is an excellent jogging companion, and may like to swim and retrieve although it was not bred for that task.
Grooming
Brush the coat and check the ears regularly, and bathe only when necessary. This breed is an average shedder.
Living conditions
The Pointer will do okay in at least an average-sized backyard but better with a lot of run-about room. It is not recommended that a Pointer live in an apartment.
Fun Fact
This breed is named after the way it stands motionless when it spots its prey, as if it is pointing directly at it.
