Description
The Flat-Coated Retriever, a sleek and striking medium to large-sized breed of dog, boasts a lustrous black or liver-colored coat, expressive eyes, and a long tapering tail. With a uniquely shaped head featuring a strong muzzle and floppy ears, these intelligent, outgoing pups make for excellent family pets, renowned for their high energy levels and love of play - especially with children. Adept swimmers, these dogs are frequently employed in waterfowl hunting. Bred in mid-19th century England as a hunting dog, the Flat-Coated Retriever is a cross between the Labrador Retriever, the Newfoundland, and the Collie. Also referred to as the "Flat-Coat" or "Flattie" for short.
Health Problems
Although generally healthy, the Flat-Coated Retriever, like all breeds, is predisposed to certain health concerns such as hip dysplasia, cancer, and eye problems. To maintain their wellbeing, they require routine veterinary check-ups and preventative care.
Exercise
These pups require ample exercise, with long walks, runs, and swimming sessions being ideal. Apartment living is not suitable, as they need access to open spaces to run and play.
Grooming
A thick, glossy coat requires regular brushing to keep it in top condition, with moderate shedding year-round and heavy shedding during shedding season.
Living Environment
The Flat-Coated Retriever flourishes in a home with an active family that can provide ample exercise and attention.
