Description
Also known as the Zwergschnauzer, The Miniature Schnauzer are known for their signature bushy eyebrows and beard, and are always ready for adventure. Originating from Germany, these pups were initially bred as rat catchers on farms, but now they're known for being loyal and affectionate family pets. And let's not forget their size - these pooches have plenty of heart and make up for their small stature with their big personalities!
Characteristics
Miniature Schnauzers come in three colours: salt and pepper, black and silver, and solid black. And while their coats may be wiry and thick, they're surprisingly soft to the touch. Plus, with their small size and low shedding coat, they're the perfect companion for anyone who loves dogs but hates the mess.
Living Environment
These little guys are perfect for small space living, making them great apartment dogs. They’re a great family pet and if you have other pets at home, they'll fit right in, as they're known to be good with other animals as long as they’re socialised properly. They’re a good watchdog but because of this tendency to bark at anything and everything, they may not be the best fit for someone who lives in a noise-sensitive building.
Health problems
This breed can be prone to liver disease, kidney stones, diabetes, skin disorders, von Willebrand's disease and cysts. It puts on weight easily so don't overfeed it.
Exercise
Despite their small size, Miniature Schnauzers are active little dogs and need plenty of exercise to keep them happy and healthy. They love to play and run around, so a good walk around the neighbourhood or a play in the park will do the trick. And while they may be energetic, they also have a bit of a lazy side, so they won't mind lounging on the couch with you either.
Grooming
Miniature Schnauzers shed minimally, which can be an advantage for those with allergies, as they are considered one of the more hypoallergenic breeds available. With their wiry, thick coats, they require regular grooming to keep them looking their best. A daily brush with a slicker brush will keep their coats from matting combined with a trim or hand strip every 6-8 weeks. They'll need regular clips to keep their beards and eyebrows looking sharp.
