Description

The Newfoundland is a remarkable extra-large breed originally from Canada, where they were bred as working dogs for fishing boats and water rescue.

Characteristics

Newfoundlands are known for their loyal and protective nature, making them excellent family companions. However, early socialization and training are important to ensure they develop good manners and obedience. They are generally calm and patient with their families but can be cautious of strangers. Due to their size and strength, they should always be supervised around children.

Living Environment

These dogs require a spacious living environment with access to water, such as a house with a large yard or near a body of water. They are not recommended for apartment living due to their size and exercise needs. Regular exercise is necessary to maintain their physical and mental health.

Grooming

Newfoundlands have a thick double coat that sheds heavily, earning them a high shed level. They require regular brushing to remove loose hair and prevent matting. Their coat also provides some water resistance, so they are comfortable swimming in cold water. However, their ears and paws need to be dried thoroughly after swimming to prevent infections.

Health Issues

While generally a healthy breed, Newfoundlands are prone to certain health issues, such as hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, and heart problems. Regular vet check-ups and proper care can help prevent and manage these issues.

Did you know...

This gentle giant was traditionally used to help fishermen haul in nets, carry boat lines back to shore and retrieve anything that fell into the water.
