Description
A sturdy little dog with short legs and erect pointed ears, the Scottish Terrier has a distinctive wiry coat with longer hair on the beard, eyebrows, legs and lower part of the body. Colours are normally black, wheaten or brindle; there may be a bit of white on the chest. This breed was originally called the Aberdeen Terrier, after the Scottish town of Aberdeen.
Characteristics
The Scottie is charming, full of character, alert and playful. It makes a good watchdog but can be a bit stubborn. This dog will make a good pet.
Health Problems
This breed can be prone to Scottie Cramp, Von Willebrand's disease, flea allergies, mast cell tumours, and skin and jaw problems.
Exercise
This dog needs daily walks or plays off the leash.
Grooming
Regular brushing is important. Invest in professional trimming twice a year. This breed sheds little to no hair.
Living Environment
Apartment living is fine if it gets enough regular exercise. This breed prefers cooler climates.
Fun Fact
This breed was featured in the Disney movie 'Lady and the Tramp' as a Scottish Terrier named Jock.
