Description

The Shar Pei is an ancient breed that originated in China, dating back to the Han Dynasty over 2,000 years ago. Originally bred for hunting, guarding, and fighting, their unique appearance and loyal temperament made them popular among Chinese royalty. However, their numbers decreased significantly during the Communist Revolution, and the breed was almost lost. In the 1970s, a few Shar Pei were brought to the US, where they quickly became popular pets. Today, Shar Pei are known for their distinctive wrinkles and affectionate personalities.

Characteristics

Shar Pei have a unique look with their loose, wrinkled skin, and blue-black tongue. They come in various colors, including black, cream, red, and blue. Their loyalty and protectiveness make them great family pets, but they can be wary of strangers and other dogs. Socialization from a young age is important to help them develop good behavior. Shar Pei are intelligent and independent, which means they can be challenging to train. Positive reinforcement and consistency are key to successful training. They are moderate to high energy dogs and need daily exercise to keep them healthy and happy.

Living Environment

Shar Pei are not suitable for apartment living due to their size and exercise needs. They require a home with a securely fenced yard where they can run and play. They can be sensitive to extreme temperatures, so it's important to keep them indoors during hot or cold weather. Shar Pei are affectionate and loyal to their families, but they can be independent and stubborn. They do best with experienced dog owners who can provide them with the structure and training they need.

Exercise

Shar Pei have moderate to high energy levels and need daily exercise to keep them healthy and happy. They enjoy walks, playtime, and other physical activities. They also benefit from mental stimulation, such as obedience training, puzzle toys, and interactive games.

Grooming

Shar Pei have a short, coarse coat that requires minimal grooming. However, their wrinkles need special attention to prevent infections and odor. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth and drying thoroughly is essential to keep them clean and healthy. They are moderate to heavy shedders and need occasional brushing to remove loose hair.

Health Problems

Shar Pei are prone to several health issues, including:
Skin problems: Their wrinkles can trap dirt and moisture, leading to skin infections and irritations.
Eye problems: Shar Pei can develop a condition called entropion, where their eyelids roll inward and irritate the eye.
Hip dysplasia: This is a common issue in many breeds, including Shar Pei, where the hip joint doesn't fit properly and can cause pain and mobility issues. Ear infections: Shar Pei can be prone to ear infections due to their small, folded ears. Cancer: They are also at risk for various types of cancer, including skin cancer and lymphoma.

Fun Fact

The Shar Pei became a Kiwi fav when a Shar Pei pup named Rolly became the face of toilet paper company Purex.
