Description
The Smooth Haired Dachshund, also called the Miniature Dachshund, is a pint-sized pup with German roots. Their compact frame boasts a long, sleek body and petite legs that situate their snout low to the ground. Dressed in a glossy coat that comes in a rainbow of colours including rich red, bold black, luscious chocolate, and creamy hues. Their origin dates back to the 15th century when they were bred as hunting dogs in Germany to track small game like badgers and rabbits.
Characteristics
These tiny tikes have plenty of personality to match their darling appearance. Their affectionate and devoted demeanour is balanced by their lively and headstrong tendencies. Their quick intellect and eagerness to please make them a breeze to train, but their stubborn streak can present a challenge at times. With an innate drive to hunt small prey, they need to be watched when around smaller pets.
Health Problems
While their charm is undeniable, Smooth Haired Dachshunds do have some health concerns. They may be susceptible to spinal problems, weight gain, and dental issues. Regular vet visits, a healthy diet, and exercise routine can help stave off these potential problems.
Exercise
These lively little pups love to be active and require daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. They'll gladly join you for a walk or romp around the park. However, their delicate backs require extra care, so avoid excessive jumping or stair climbing.
Grooming
Fortunately, their short, shiny coat is low maintenance, needing only occasional baths and routine brushing to keep them looking dapper. As adaptable pooches, they can adjust to different living conditions, but a fenced yard is ideal for their safety during playtime.
Living Environment
They can even make great apartment dwellers as long as they get enough exercise.
